Program Summary:
It is with great humility to
introduce four internationally recognized experts on Haiti and redevelopment
efforts in at-risk nations. The entire world is focused upon the
plight of Haiti, its vibrant people, the current humanitarian crisis, and the
next steps towards building a modern Haiti. The United Nations, among
other international organizations, have estimated 200,000 citizens considered
lost, possibly 500,000 plus maimed or injured, and another one and
one-half million plus displaced out of a 7.5 million population. For
a poor and impoverished country the scope and scale of the destruction and loss
of life is beyond human comprehension.
While nations and citizens around the world seek to support this beautiful yet
challenged country in its time of great need much will need to be done
for reconstruction of economic, governmental, social, and environmental
institutions and services that will determine the 'new' Haiti. This
redevelopment effort will take at least the next 10 and possibly 20 years. What
are the steps that need to be taken now to help the Haitians and their
institutions rebuild in an orderly and position manner?. Are there
environmental, economic, and social "best practices" implemented
around the globe such as in Indonesia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines,
Taiwan, and China among others which have suffered catastrophic losses?
Our four [4] speakers will address the immediate needs but the focus of this
program is upon "What Next"!
Our four guests will
share photographs and insights on the current challenges along with a few
of the "best practices" that may have positive impact immediately
during the clean up and long-term in the redevelopment processes. Besides
His Excellency Ambassador Joseph, Dr. Arthur B. Keys, President, International
Relief & Development will address the issues facing his organization moving
almost one billion dollars worth of medicine, food, clothing, and construction
materials into Haiti. Lindsay Mattison, Executive Director, INTERNATIONAL
ACTION is providing fresh and clean water to 144,000 Haitians daily with that
number expanding to over 500,000 Haitains within the next few weeks.
As you may know EmeraldPlanet is a worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to identifying at least 1,000 'best practices' for sustainable environmental and economic development. Our efforts are to link those having such "best practices" with those needing the technologies, processes, services, and products to be outstanding ecological stewards of their resources.
